Was I Confident? Reflecting on My Word for 2019

The word I picked for 2019 was “confident”. Not confident in myself or what I could accomplish, but confident in God and what I have seen Him do. Confident in the knowledge that He will continue to work in our lives, no matter the season.

A few months ago, someone commented on the confidence Jay and I appear to show since his time in prison. They said it was something we probably had to develop after what we’d been through.

I find it hard to believe that prison time usually inspires confidence in people.

Jay will always have that black mark on his record and there will likely be some people that treat us differently because of it. The confidence comes because we have seen God show up in some amazing ways during those difficult years. We now know that no matter what we face in life, we face it with God at our side.

When I chose “confident” for my word in 2019, the reference was to Psalm 27:1, 3.

In the psalm, David writes: “The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?…Though a host encamp against me, my heart will not fear; though war arise against me, In spite of this I shall be confident.”

Over the last several years, I have seen God as my defense, my provider, my peace.

I used to depend on Jay to provide for our family, but while he was gone, I learned to depend on God for everything we needed. I had no other choice. Perhaps that’s why people think we are confident. Not because we are on the other side of a trial but because we have seen and felt God’s presence during that trial.

How can we be confident?

We have seen His provision and felt his peace. We know there is purpose in all things, and we’ve seen God use them for His glory (Romans 8:28). When you actually see it all happen, how can you not be confident!

How did you do in 2019?

How did you do with your word of 2019? Do you think you accomplished all God intended with your word?
